Service Project

The volunteer before me began an English library in the extra bedroom of the apartment. I have taken over this duty and would like to start a book drive in Thomasville. Currently, I have about 500 books of varying level. I’d like to get more books for the average 4th – 7th grader. The kids here love Harry Potter and other teenage series books (I think the Marked series would be good). Anything about sports would also be good. I also think it would be nice to get some English posters and/or maps for the library. If you have any ideas or would like to help me get this started in Thomasville, let me know!

  1. Books are practically free. It's mailing them that costs money. What's the address and how much could we expect to pay in shipping?

  2. Yes. Unfortunately, shipping is extremely expensive. I think the best thing to do (but more time consuming) would be to go to a few businesses and explain what you are doing and try to get some money donated. Mom just shipped me a package and it was $50.00.

For anyone who is still interested here are a few other ideas of books that the last volunteer left for me:
Easy books about America - anything from daily life to holidays and sports.
Sports magazines and sports books (especially about basketball) - the kids will go crazy over it!
English/Chinese books. Sometimes you can find classic books that have English and Chinese translations.
    Comic books & joke books.

Naturally, this is a very large project to take on. I completely understand if you can't help. Shipping is extremely costly.
    Thanks!!!
